Ghosts of the Lower Atrato River
The vast network of the mighty Atrato River's tendrils spread for miles in and around the mostly afrocolombian and indigenous state of El Choco. The river is a central part for the different communities that are sustained by its fish, navigability and holiness.
In 1997, as the war between organized crime, the FARC, , and the state raged throughout the country and at the edges of the country. El Choco had remained mostly untouched by the war. state of El Choco, the military negotiated a pact with the right wing paramilitary forces known as the AUC to wipe out the FARC.
